The Humane Society of Ocean City is a private, non-profit (501c) organization located in Ocean City, New Jersey. HSOC operates a "No-Kill" Animal Shelter; a low-cost spay/neuter clinic; and a humane educational center.
Since 1964, HSOC has proudly served Ocean City and surrounding communities in Atlantic and Cape May counties. Our Shelter has rescued and cared for many stray or abandoned pets. HSOC strives to place its homeless residents into good, loving homes. For unwanted pets, HSOC provides them a safe, clean, and happy home in the Shelter for the rest of their precious lives.
In September 2002, HSOC opened a new building for spay/neutering and humane educational services. The local public is welcome to bring their pets and apply for spay or neuter appointments for affordable fees. The clinic has state-of-the-art medical equipment , staffed by a licensed veterinarian and professional assistants. The educational center holds classes and shelter tours for children and young adults on the proper treatment and dignified respect for all animals. The center is staffed by dedicated volunteer teachers who effectively convey to young minds an understanding and appreciation of pet guardianship.

Bring your bow-wow's to our annual Barks on the Boards dog walk event starting at the Music Pier on the Boardwalk in Ocean City. Walk your dog for a cause! All proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Ocean City. There was a contest for the largest, smallest, best dressed, and best tail wagging dog - free t-shirts for dog walkers, great prizes and giveaways.

The community is welcome to bring their pets to our Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic, located in our new "Red-Barn" building next to the Shelter. It is a state-of-the art medical facility staffed with a veterinarian and veterinary technicians specializing in the spaying and neutering of cats and dogs. After your appointment is confirmed, you bring your pet to the Clinic, register with the administrative clerk, leave your pet there under the professional care of the veterinary staff, and later pick up your pet.

Groups of young people, accompanied by their parents, guardians, or teachers, are welcome to visit our Humane Education Center. Our experienced Humane Education staff is dedicated to showing young people how best to respect, love and care for pets. Programs are designed to meet the needs of various groups of all ages to learn about the proper care and respect of pets.
The main program at the HSOC Educational Center is PET CARE 101. The Pet Care 101 program is designed to educate children, ages 6 - 12, on the proper care of the family pet(s) and to instill a loving respect for all animals. The interactive presentation focuses on pet diet, shelter, exercise, grooming and the necessity of spay/neutering. Following this fun and informative 30 minute program, the children head off on a "Shelter Safari", a supervised tour of the OC Shelter where the children visit the animals to learn more about their needs and to make a new furry friend or two. Pet Care 101 is a FREE program offered to all Cape-Atlantic elementary schools, home school groups, youth organizations and play groups. The presentation is tailored to its audience's age level and is held in the Educational Services Room at HSOC's new "Red Barn" building located next to the shelter.
Visits can be scheduled on site, 7 days a week, and staff is available to visit schools, clubs, and off-site locales at times convenient to those who book a program. Just e-mail HSOC at hsocadopt@verizon.net or call 399-2018 to schedule.
HSOC also presents an educational program in the Summer months for pre-school children called "Animal Crackers". The program teaches the proper treatment of pets with songs, stories, and hands-on activities.
Now, here are photos of four of our long-time cat residents: Tamale, Veruna, Dusty, and Leo. They want to thank the many children who have visited them during the "Shelter Safari" tours by the Educational staff. These wonderful cats are very grateful to the children for their kindness and support. However, Veruna (second from left) is no longer at the Shelter since she has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Veruna was loved by all the children that met her. They will never forget Veruna and were surely inspired by her to love and respect all animals.

Volunteering at the Shelter
HSOC always needs animal-friendly people to help us wih our cause. You can help setup our display booth at our fund-raising events. You can sell items, greet people, and handout pamphlets. Or you can perform animal care work, or do cleaning tasks at the Shelter. There's always dogs that need to be walked, or whatever other help HSOC needs. You can even propose a project or event that is done on your own at your home, school, or elsewhere.
"Best Friend" Sponsorship Program for Unadopted Shelter Cats
Can you sponsor one of our timid feral cats? All of our ferals are fearful of human touch, probably from past abuse, or from surviving on the streets. Their mommy ferals taught them to fear humans. Some have imperfections like a missing eye, bent ear, or a damaged tail, or are not so attractive in some other way. They are so shy that they are nearly impossible to place in a home. Our "Feral Room" is their sanctuary. However, you can personally sponsor one and visit your "Best Friend" anytime.
